Removal and replacement with exposed aggregate

The old surface out, the ground corrected, and exposed aggregate in its place, one crew and one written price for the whole job.

$165 to $220 per m² including removal of the old surface. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

Most exposed aggregate in the established east is not poured on bare ground. It replaces something: a 1970s driveway cracked along the middle, pavers that have spread and sunk into trip hazards, or asphalt that has gone soft at the edges. Replacement is its own job, priced as one number, because the difference between a replacement that lasts and one that repeats the failure is what happens after the old surface comes out.

Why the old surface failed matters

A slab cracked down the centre on reactive clay, common across the east, failed because of what was under it, not what was in it. Breaking out the old surface exposes the actual ground, and the base gets corrected before anything is poured: soft spots out, compacted base material in where the ground needs it, drainage falls set properly. Then the new surface is built to the same specification as any new pour, steel on chairs, minimum 25 MPa mix, controlled wash-off, sealed after cure.

Concrete, pavers and asphalt out

Each comes out differently and the quote reflects it: reinforced concrete is broken and lifted, pavers are stripped and their bedding sand removed rather than poured over, and asphalt is peeled back to formation. All of it is tipped legitimately and itemised in the written quote rather than appearing as a variation on the day.

The crossover comes too

A replacement is the natural moment to fix a scraping or cracked crossover, and most eastern councils require a vehicle crossing permit for the work regardless. The permit is identified with the quote, and the crossover is rebuilt to the council’s standard drawing as part of the job. The areas page covers each council’s process.

One price, honestly built

$165 to $220 per m² including removal, supplied, laid, washed and sealed. Choose the stone the same way every new surface here is chosen, from samples viewed wet and dry on site, price your metres in the calculator, and compare the whole job against the cost guide. If your existing surface is exposed aggregate that has simply gone dull, read the resealing page first, because the cheaper job is sometimes the right one.

How a job runs

Five stages, each signed off before the next

  1. 01

    Site measure and samples

The area, the levels, the access and the ground, measured on site. Stone and paste samples viewed wet and dry against your walls in daylight, not from a brochure.

  2. 02

    Written quote

One fixed written quote for the scope measured. Any council crossover permit your job needs is identified here, before anything is booked.

  3. 03

    Form, base and steel

Boxing to the lines, base material brought in and compacted where the ground needs it, steel mesh on chairs. The day that decides how the slab performs.

  4. 04

    Pour, wash and cure

The decorative mix poured and screeded, surface retarder applied, and the paste washed off inside its window to reveal the stone evenly. Then the surface is kept curing.

  5. 05

    Seal and handover

Sealed after cure with the sealer suited to the surface, wet look or natural. The reseal interval and care notes are put in writing at handover.

Questions

Removal and replacement questions

What does removal and replacement cost?

$165 to $220 per m² all in, which is the exposed aggregate rate plus $35 per m² for breaking out and tipping the old surface. A 45 m² driveway replacement lands between roughly $7,400 and $9,900. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

Can exposed aggregate be poured over my existing concrete?

Overlays exist, but over cracked or moving concrete they inherit every problem underneath, and height at door thresholds and the crossover usually rules them out anyway. Where the old slab is failing, taking it out and correcting the base is the version of the job that lasts, and it is the one quoted here.

Is paver removal cheaper than concrete removal?

Usually, yes. Pavers lift faster than reinforced concrete breaks, and asphalt sits in between. The removal line in the quote reflects what is actually there, which is one of the things the site measure is for.

How long does a full replacement take?

Most residential replacements run three to four days on site as a guide, removal and base, forming and steel, then the pour and wash-off on one day, with sealing after cure. Vehicles stay off the new surface for seven days.
